How important is mowing height when it comes to turf health?
The answer may surprise you. Mowing height is actually incredibly important when it comes to the health of your lawn.
Many homeowners fall into the habit of cutting their grass too short - either because they like the look of a closely-cropped lawn, or because they don't want to have to lug out their mower again in a few days' time when the grass sprouts up again. Professional landscaping companies also tend to scalp the turf during the peak mowing season to ensure the lawn doesn't get out of hand between visits. You may be asking yourself: "what's the big deal?"
To give you a quick answer, take a look at the image below. The lawn on the left is mowed by a (human) competitor and, although it is nice and neat, lacks lushness and vibrancy. The lawn on the right is mowed regularly by TurfBot's robotic mower, which always cuts at the right height (usually a higher cut of around 8 cm). The difference in colour really is staggering.
Why the dramatic contrast between these two neighboring lawns? Mowing too low places stress on the turf by eliminating most of the nutrient-producing leaf surface. The remaining grass blade is not left with enough leaf tissue to create food for itself through photosynthesis and must use its remaining energy and nutrients to restore the leaf, weakening the root zone in the process. A longer cutting height allows for a deeper, stronger root system and keeps the grass looking thick, green, and lush.
